What Statistics calculators measure

Descriptive statistics condense a dataset into values that describe center, spread or relative position. Mean, median and mode answer different questions about center; range, variance and standard deviation describe spread; z-scores and percentiles locate values within a reference dataset.

A calculated statistic is only as meaningful as the observations and method behind it. NexaCalc shows the selected denominator or percentile convention so results can be interpreted and reproduced.

Choosing a method

Use the mean for an arithmetic balance point, the median for the ordered middle and the mode for repeated values. Use range for a quick endpoint span, then variance or standard deviation when every observation's distance from the mean matters.

Use a z-score when a mean and standard deviation define the comparison scale. Use a percentile when the goal is rank within ordered observations, and always state the percentile convention because methods can differ on small datasets.

FAQs

What are descriptive statistics?

Descriptive statistics summarize observed data through measures of center, spread, frequency and relative position without by themselves making population-wide claims.

When should I use mean instead of median?

Use the mean when every value should influence the arithmetic center. Prefer the median when skew or extreme values make the ordered middle more representative.

Can a dataset have more than one mode?

Yes. Several values can share the highest frequency. If every value occurs equally often, the Mode Calculator reports no distinct mode.

What does the range leave out?

Range uses only the minimum and maximum, so it does not describe how values are distributed between those endpoints.

What is the difference between population and sample variance?

Population variance divides the squared-deviation sum by n. Sample variance uses n minus 1 when estimating population variability from a sample.

Why is standard deviation easier to interpret than variance?

Standard deviation is the square root of variance, so it returns to the original measurement unit while variance uses squared units.

What does a z-score of zero mean?

A z-score of zero means the value equals the entered mean. Positive and negative scores show direction, and magnitude measures distance in standard deviations.

Can I compare z-scores from different scales?

Often yes when each value is standardized against a suitable mean and standard deviation, but comparability still depends on meaningful reference distributions.

Why can percentile calculators return different answers?

Percentile conventions use different rank and interpolation rules. Small datasets make those method differences especially visible.

Does a percentile equal a percentage score?

No. A percentage score is a fraction of possible points, while a percentile describes relative rank within a reference set.

Are planned probability and inference calculators live?

No. This phase publishes only the first eight descriptive and ranking tools. The remaining 22 approved Statistics tools stay visibly planned and have no indexable calculator pages.

Do these calculators prove statistical significance?

No. The live Phase 1 tools describe entered data. Planned inference tools will require additional assumptions and still will not replace qualified statistical review.
